Despite business concern over a rise in the minimum wage in Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the move was the correct one.
Despite business concern over a rise in the minimum wage in Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the move was the correct one.
The Fair Work Commission has recommended a 5.2 per cent pay rise for Australia's low-paid workers, equating to an extra $40 a week.
The minimum wage should be set at a rate which ensures low-paid workers' incomes do not go backwards, the government has argued to the Fair Work Commission.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said its wage price index rose by an annual rate of 2.4 per cent, less than half the rate of inflation.
Anthony Albanese has used a Labour Day march to spruik his plan for stronger wages under Labor to thousands of unionists in Brisbane.
