Victoria openers build Shield platform


Victoria have taken a slow and steady approach to their first innings after running through the Western Australia batting line-up earlier on day two of the Sheffield Shield final at the WACA.

At tea, Victoria reached 0-53 in reply to the hosts’ 386.

Young gun Will Pucovski is unbeaten on 34 While in-form opener Travis Dean is19 not out.

Victoria were rarely troubled with the bat during the middle session but have chewed up 26 overs, with bonus batting points to come into play in the event of a draw in the five-day contest.

WA ended day one at an imposing 3-290 but Will Sutherland helped turned the visitors’ fortunes around.

The hoets lost 6-35 at one stage but a big-hitting 50 down the order from spinner Corey Rocchiccioli helped the locals add 64 runs for the last two wickets.

Sutherland collected four wickets during the morning session to return figures of 5-78.

Scott Boland picked up 3-80, including the wicket of opener Cameron Bancroft for 141.
