History-hunting Disco on verge of semi-finals

Australian bowls champion Aaron Wilson has all but navigated a tricky group stage in his quest for a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal.

The man known as ‘Disco’ put one foot in the semi-finals after a convincing 10-1 10-2 win over Cook Islands rival Royden Aperau on Sunday in Glasgow.

It was Wilson’s fifth win from as many matches, and another victory over Jersey’s Taylor Greechan on Monday in his final group match would ensure safe passage.

“So far, so good. I’m all focused on performance and recovery,” Wilson said.

“One more game, hopefully it all goes to plan and I get a finals berth.

“A bit of sleep, a bit of icing of the old wrist and knee. Just the basics and come out fresh for tomorrow.”

Wilson won gold on debut at the 2018 Gold Coast Games and repeated the dose in Birmingham in 2022.

A third consecutive singles title would make the 34-year-old just the second person to complete the feat, after English great David Bryant, who won the last of his four successive titles in 1978.

“It’s humbling when you think about it that way, but it’s all business at this stage,” Wilson said.

“I’ll just keep focused on the job one bowl at a time and see what happens.”

Also on Sunday, Australian women’s pair Dawn Hayman and Kelsey Cottrell produced a dominant 11-1 16-0 win over Niue’s Catherine Papani and Christine Ioane.

The result kept the Australian duo’s semi-final chances alive ahead of Monday’s clash with Northern Ireland pair Chloe Wilson and Shauna O’Neill, who are unbeaten on top of Section A.
