‘Speed likely a factor’ as two children killed in crash

Police in Sydney are searching for a grey sedan they believe was involved in a fatal car accident that killed two children and left a third injured in the city’s south overnight.
Emergency services were called to The Grand Parade, Monterey, at 9.50pm on Friday following reports of an accident to find a car had crashed into a tree.
Two boys aged nine and 10 were treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital where they later died.
A nine-year-old girl was also taken to the same hospital with minor injuries,
Police on Saturday said she is the daughter of the 33-year-old male driver, and the boys were his nephews.
The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment where he also underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
Detective Inspector Jason Hogan from the NSW Crash Investigations Unit said police believe speed was a factor.
“That will be a significant line of inquiry for our crash investigators, to establish the speed of the vehicle, and that appears to be … a contributing factor,” he said.
He said police are hunting the driver of a grey sedan seen driving alongside the car when it struck the tree, before allegedly driving off.
“At this stage we will be seeking the assistance of members of the public to identify a grey sedan that was travelling in lane one around the time of the collision,” Det Insp Hogan said.
He said officers are planning to interview the driver later on Saturday, and called for any members of the public with information to contact police.
“It is a particularly nasty crash where two innocent young children have lost their lives,” he said.
“We will be in constant contact with all members of the family to ensure their ongoing welfare, and that they are kept abreast of our investigation as it unfolds.”
