Dash Daniels is looking for a new NBL home, opting not to return to Melbourne United for a second season as he plots a course for the NBA.

The younger brother of Atlanta Hawks starting guard and Boomers star Dyson played 35 games and started in 11 as a Next Star under Dean Vickerman at United last season.

But the 196cm guard’s role was slowly reduced and he gradually slipped out of the first round of most NBA draft projections, before pulling out in April.

It follows the club securing Jacob Chance, a former United assistant, on a four-year deal as Vickerman’s replacement last month.

“Following discussions with all parties, we believe this is the best path forward for everyone involved,” Next Stars recruitment boss Liam Santamaria said of Daniels, who thrives on defence like his brother.

“Dash has grown significantly during his time with Melbourne and, thanks largely to that great work, I’m confident he is well placed for a strong second season as a Next Star.”

Daniels, 18, won the best defender award at this year’s adidas Eurocamp and is currently slated as the No.40 pick in next year’s NBA draft.

Thirteen Next Stars have been drafted directly from the NBL since 2020, including Karim Lopez, who recently became the seventh Next Star and first Mexican player to go in the first round.

Daniels has been linked to South East Melbourne Phoenix, while there is understood to be interstate interest.

“I have nothing but respect for Melbourne United,” Daniels said.

“It’s a highly professional organisation from top to bottom and I’ve valued every part of my journey with the club.

“I’m excited for what’s ahead, but I’ll always look back on my time with Melbourne United with amazing memories and true appreciation.”
