Sydney stalwart Dane Rampe has announced his retirement from the AFL.

The 36-year-old defender called time on his 289-game career on Friday after captaining the Swans in what would be his final match, the club’s preliminary final loss to Fremantle.

Sydney had turned to former co-captain Rampe to lead the embattled club through September after skipper Callum Mills suffered an ACL injury in their semi-final win over Brisbane.

Mills’ vice-captain Isaac Heeney was among five Swans players stood down by the club throughout September after a post-match party at the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne.

Chad Warner, James Jordon, Riley Bice and now-North Melbourne player Nick Blakey were also suspended across round 24 and the two finals.

A Swans fan who sprinted on to the SCG in 1999 after Tony Lockett broke the league’s goal-kicking record, Rampe has been a heart-and-soul player for the club since being drafted as a rookie in 2012 at age 22.

He made his debut in 2013 and went on to co-captain the Swans with Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker from 2019 to 2023.

Rampe is a Bob Skilton Medallist (2019) and an All-Australian (2016), making him one of the club’s greatest rookie-list success stories alongside childhood idol Brett Kirk.

The only accolade missing from Rampe’s glittering resume is a premiership, having played in four grand-final defeats (2014, 2016, 2022 and 2024) for the Swans.

Rampe had been re-drafted as a rookie alongside fellow defender Jake Lloyd at the end of 2025, before helping the Swans to a second-placed finish in this year’s home-and-away season.

The door for Rampe to continue his career had appeared open, with defender Mills facing the possibility of missing all of the 2027 season.

Unlike Rampe, Lloyd had signed on for a 15th season.
