Straddie Punter: Eagle Farm bets and interstate value plays

The Queensland Cup and Tattersall’s Members Cup headline the local action, while feature races at Caulfield and Rosehill offer Queensland punters strong interstate opportunities.

Introducing the Straddie Punter

Welcome to the first edition of the Straddie Punter, The Queenslander’s new Saturday racing column for Queensland readers following the best thoroughbred action around Australia.

Each week, the column will examine the major Queensland program alongside leading interstate meetings, identifying runners with an appealing combination of recent form, race fitness, barriers, weights and potential value.

The philosophy is simple: a favourite is not automatically a good bet, and a roughie is not value merely because it carries a big price. Every selection should have a credible form or race-map argument.

Saturday’s best bets

Best bet: Jigsaw, Caulfield Race 6
Next best: In’Kantosstar, Caulfield Race 1
Best Queensland bet: Ratenotice, Eagle Farm Race 10
Queensland Cup selection: Cavalry Man, Eagle Farm Race 9
Best value: Changing Colours, Caulfield Race 9
Best roughie: Snap Decision, Rosehill Race 2

Eagle Farm quaddie

Race 7: Another Champers, Boomelli, Pierantes
Race 8: Bluepinot, Naval Seal, Burleigh Magic
Race 9: Cavalry Man, Amplify, Diamond Show
Race 10: Ratenotice, Fukubana, Zuleika

The suggested strategy is to retain three runners through the first three legs before anchoring Ratenotice in the final race.

Ratenotice can finish Eagle Farm strongly

The ten-race Eagle Farm program is headlined by the Queensland Cup and Tattersall’s Members Cup.

Ratenotice is the leading local bet in the Members Cup. The lightly raced four-year-old has won both starts this preparation, carries 53kg and draws barrier two.

That combination should allow Ratenotice to settle near the speed without spending unnecessary energy. The step into Listed company is a challenge, but the horse’s current form and favourable map provide an opportunity to rise through the grades.

Fukubana is the main danger after producing a win and two placings from its latest three starts. Warby also warrants respect after winning last start, while Zuleika is the roughie returning from a spell.

Cavalry Man heads the Queensland Cup

Cavalry Man receives top billing in the 2400-metre Queensland Cup after arriving off a last-start victory.

Barrier 12 and 60kg present challenges, but a covered run would give the gelding an opportunity to carry its winning momentum into the Listed staying contest.

Amplify and Felix The Scat belong in wider combinations. Diamond Show is the value runner with 53kg and appeals for trifectas, first fours and smaller each-way bets.

Earlier, Metaphorically can chase a third consecutive victory in Race 2, while Bring Me Kash, Another Champers and Bluepinot are the main selections through the middle of the card.

Jigsaw the standout interstate bet

At Caulfield, Jigsaw is the strongest selection of the day in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes.

The experienced sprinter resumes after winning four consecutive races last preparation. Barrier one provides an opportunity to secure a prominent position without spending unnecessary energy early.

Rey Magnerio is the main danger, while Inkaruna is the roughie from barrier two.

In the Beverly Handicap, In’Kantosstar has won three consecutive races and draws barrier one. The gelding rises in class but carries 57.5kg and should receive an economical run.

Changing Colours is the value selection in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap. The mare chases a fifth successive victory, carries 52kg and has already won at Caulfield.

Sheza Alibi is the selection in the Might And Power, while Blind Raise gets the nod in the Caulfield Guineas.

Rosehill requires caution

Rosehill’s large fields demand a more cautious approach.

Force March brings consecutive wins into the Midway Handicap, while Wolf Island is the Highway selection after back-to-back victories.

Concrete Storm enters the Gloaming Stakes with three straight wins. Snap Decision is the Highway roughie, although barrier 16 makes it a small-stake value play.
