Blues want hot-head Radley to embrace aggressive streak

Laurie Daley is prepared to take the rough with the smooth when it comes to Victor Radley, urging the Sydney Roosters lock to lean into his fiery reputation for his State of Origin debut.
Radley, who boasts one of the longest rap sheets in the NRL, was a surprise inclusion on the NSW bench when Daley named his squad for the May 27 series opener on Monday.
The 28-year-old has been sinbinned 11 times during his 166-game NRL career and has conceded seven penalties across five games for the Roosters this season.
Radley, who did not play in Magic Round due to a ban for a high tackle, missed the start of this season after being hit with a 10-game club-enforced suspension for an off-field indiscretion.
But Daley warned he would not tell Radley to curb his aggression and declared: “I picked Victor to be Victor.
“I don’t have to have a conversation with Victor (about his temperament), I love everything he brings.
“He brings intent and he brings a physicality and I think a lot of people when they have watched Victor Radley over the last few years would have loved to have seen him in this arena.
“Now he’s eligible for game one, I don’t think there’s a better time to give him that chance.
“He’s a good person with good qualities I am after so he is someone I am really looking forward to working with.”
Born in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Radley’s hopes of an Origin debut appeared dashed when he made his Test debut for England – his father’s homeland – in 2022.
But a loosening of the eligibility laws over the off-season brought Radley, who was a member of extended squads under Brad Fittler, back into calculations.
The same rule changes have meant that Cronulla prop Addin Fonua-Blake and Penrith outside back Casey McLean, who have both won Test caps for tier-one New Zealand, could also be included in the NSW fold.
“They’ve all played at different levels… Victor’s played for England but he’s also played in grand finals so they’ll handle it and it adds a bit more depth to our selection,” Daley said.
“We’re very happy we can give them the opportunity to represent NSW.
“All three of them when I spoke to them are very passionate and all in on NSW, which they needed to be otherwise they wouldn’t have been selected.”
