Gutsy Gibson pushes seeded Czech star to the limit

Talia Gibson’s career-best week on the professional tennis circuit has proven things can flourish in the California desert.
The rising Australian star made it all to the way to the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 event in Indian Wells, her brilliant efforts ensuring she will break into the world’s top 100 for the first time.
Gibson gained plenty of admirers for her gutsy path to the quarters, where she put up an incredible effort before falling to 14th-seeded Czech player Linda Noskova 6-4 4-6 6-2 on Thursday (Friday AEDT).

The Australian’s breakthrough week included impressive wins over world No.7 and two-time grand slam finalist Jasmine Paolini, as well as 17th seed Clara Tauson and 11th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The 21-year-old from Perth was the first qualifier to reach the women’s singles quarter-finals at Indian Wells since 2015.
She was also the first Australian woman to reach the last eight at the hard-court tournament since Casey Dellacqua in 2014.

Gibson’s effort was even more remarkable because she reached the quarter-finals on her WTA 1000 main-draw debut.
Since the start of 2025, Gibson has won four ITF World Tennis Tour titles across W50 and W75-levels – events considered equivalent to ATP Challenger-level – most recently claiming the title at W75 Brisbane in February.
Gibson’s fine showing at the Californian tournament, regarded by many as the sport’s fifth grand slam, guaranteed she will break into the WTA top 100 for the first time on Monday.
In an earlier quarter-final, world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka held off Canadian youngster Victoria Mboko 7-6 (7-0) 6-4, keeping her in the running for her first title at Indian Wells.

After winning every point in the first-set tiebreaker, Sabalenka got the one break she needed to win the second set and move on to the semi-finals, where she will meet Noskova.
Veteran Elina Svitolina, who made the semi-finals at this year’s Australian Open, later stunned world No.2 Iga Swiatek 6-2 2-6 6-4.
Swiatek struggled early against Svitolina, with the Ukrainian capitalising on five double faults to secure three breaks and take the opening set in 38 minutes.
Swiatek found her rhythm in the second to force a decider, but Svitolina regained the upper hand by securing the only break in a closely fought third set.
“I’m extremely happy, it was a tough match,” said Svitolina, who is back in the semis for the first time in seven years.
“Iga always brings a bit extra out of me with that fighting spirit. I had to really push myself to close that match.”
Her victory set up a semi-final against Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, who scored a 6-1 7-6 (7-4) win over American Jessica Pegula.
