Star quick Josh Hazlewood has returned for the second ODI against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval as Australia prepare to bat first.

Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and sent the hosts in, meaning new Australian openers Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short will get an early shot at silencing the critics.

The pair came under criticism for how they batted in the first ODI at the MCG on Monday.

Australia won the series opener, but only after captain Pat Cummins produced a nerveless lower-order knock to get them home by two wickets.

At times, Australia batted recklessly and handed Pakistan easy wickets in a modest chase of 203.

Hazlewood missed the first match after playing a Sheffield Shield game for NSW to prepare for the five-Test series against India.

But Hazlewood will reunite with Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who both starred at the MCG, before they all sit out the third ODI against Pakistan in Perth on Sunday.
