Morgan battling to hold on to LIV Golf spot with a 66

Queensland’s Jed Morgan remains on course to retain his place in the LIV Golf League on the final day of qualifying in the United Arab Emirates.

Morgan is one of two Australians in the 20-strong field for Sunday’s 36-hole finale, which will round off three days of competition at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, featuring more than 70 players.

Sydneysider Kevin Yuan also progressed with a par on the first playoff hole following a five-way tie.

The top-three finishers will earn spots in the LIV Golf League in 2024, with Morgan finishing Saturday’s play in a four-way tie for second place.

Morgan won the Australian PGA Championship in January last year but was relegated from the LIV Golf League at the end of the 2023 season.

The Brisbane-born golfer was part of the all-Australian Ripper GC team featuring Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman and Matt Jones and is determined to rejoin them in 2024.

Morgan advanced to the double-round decider after shooting 66 on Saturday.

“I want to be back there,” said Morgan, one of 13 players in Saturday’s field who received a first-round bye, with nine of those advancing to Sunday’s shootout. 

“That’s where I want to play my golf.”

Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai set the pace with an 8-under-par 64 in the second round.

“It’s going to be awesome if I qualify for 2024 LIV Golf,” said Prateeptienchai, the winner of the recent Asian Tour Taiwan Glass Taifong Open.

New Zealand’s Ben Campbell narrowly missed out on the top 20, dropping out after a five-man playoff that decided the final spots for Sunday’s field.
