Reynolds key to Broncos premiership chances: Lockyer

Darren Lockyer says the presence of veteran halfback Adam Reynolds is key to Brisbane cashing in on their premiership opportunity, just as Allan Langer was the linchpin for the champion sides of the 1990s.
Former Broncos skipper Lockyer won all four grand finals he played in and came on the scene while four-time premiership-winning half Langer was dominating the game.
The Broncos, undefeated after five rounds, have 2014 title-winner Reynolds on the books until at least the end of next year.
Lockyer, speaking at the Brisbane launch of the NRL’s Magic Round, was asked if the Broncos had the team to win the competition.
“While you have a half like Adam Reynolds it creates an opportunity,” he said.
“Then you throw in people like Payne Haas, Reece Walsh, Herbie Farnworth … there is a window there no doubt.
“Reynolds is the key to that as well.
“His kicking game kept us in the (win) against the Dragons (in round three). The same with his kicking game against the Dolphins (in round four).
“I’m not saying take out Reynolds and we can’t win, I’m just saying he is one of those generational players like Allan Langer. While they are there you make the most of it.”
The Broncos won all the first six grand finals in which they appeared, and were masters at making their best years count on the biggest stage.
Brisbane’s defensive improvement this year is the facet of play Lockyer said was driving their early season joy.
“We haven’t gone 5-0 for 25 years so there are some really good signs,” he said.
“If all the troops stay fit, scoring points is not going to be an issue.
“Defence has been the focus in the off-season and they just need to remind themselves that has to be the focus every week.
“They have just got to keep their feet on the ground and know every week is a difficult week. This week (at home against Canberra on Saturday night) is no different.”
Lockyer said maintaining their form to the end is integral to Brisbane’s title hopes, after the side had a late season fadeout in 2022 and missed the finals.
“I don’t think anyone thought we could win it last year but they thought we could play finals,” Lockyer said.
“Their confidence is good at the moment and they are working hard for each other. History shows you need to be in that top four to have a shot at the title.”
