Stephanie Talbot has been ruled out for the WNBA season, three weeks after joining LA Sparks.

Three weeks after signing for the Los Angeles Sparks, Australian forward Stephanie Talbot will miss the upcoming WNBA season after getting hurt in her homeland.

The Sparks said on Monday that they had learned that Talbot suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament while playing for the Adelaide Lightning.

It is a cruel blow for Talbot, who three weeks ago said: “I am excited to sign with the Los Angeles Sparks for the next two years.

“I loved their vision for both myself and the team. I’m really looking forward to meeting my teammates and getting to work.”

Talbot was the WNBL’s MVP in 2020.

She only signed a two-year deal with the Sparks on February 1.

Last year she was 10th in the WNBA in 3-point shooting. She averaged 5.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 34 games for the Seattle Storm.

The 28-year-old forward has also played for Phoenix and Minnesota during her five seasons in the WNBA.

Sparks’ head coach Curt Miller was clearly delighted to have signed Talbot.

He said at the time: “Steph is a versatile wing with great length and impacts both ends of the court with her energy and effort.

“She is an outstanding perimeter shooter which will help us with floor spacing and offensive schemes.”
