Titans winger Thompson retires from NRL

Gold Coast winger Corey Thompson has announced his retirement from professional rugby league.

Thompson, 32, played 122 games in the NRL and 58 in the English Super League, enjoying career-best form after arriving at the Titans in 2020.

The journeyman had been contracted with Gold Coast until the end of the 2023 season but was hampered by a persistent knee injury this year.

On Friday afternoon, the former Canterbury, Widnes and Wests Tigers player took to social media to announce he would not feature next season.

“I’ve been lucky enough to call this my job for the past 10 years,” Thompson wrote on Instagram.

“Thank you to the four clubs I’ve been a part of for allowing me to represent your organisation.

“I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

Thompson featured in the Titans’ most recent finals appearance, a narrow elimination final loss to the Sydney Roosters in 2021 and also played in the Bulldogs side that lost the 2014 Grand Final.

Jojo Fifita, Greg Marzhew, Philip Sami and Patrick Herbert are among the Titans’ remaining options on the wing in 2023, when they’ll look to bounce back from a disappointing six wins and 13th-place finish.
