Former North Queensland Cowboys star, Jonathan Thurston, has encouraged people to take care of their mental health and be open to getting professional help.

In his first public comments following the death of his former coach, Paul Green, Thurston told the Nine Network “the days are gone of she’ll be right”.

“It’s been quite difficult, it has been a tough few days for everyone.

“I have got a range of emotions going through me each and every day, playing with the kids and thinking of the good times I had with Greeny.

“And then I think that he is not going to be here ever again and I get sad. How did it come to this?

“He just loved being around people and he was a very considerate person. He always wanted to know how you were doing, how you were feeling, what was going on in your life.”

Paul Green died at his Brisbane home on August 11. It’s been confirmed he took his own life.

Thurston encouraged people to seek help for mental health issues.

“Mental health doesn’t discriminate. It can grab you and take you to a place where you feel like the only option is to go down that path and commit suicide.

“For all of us, not only men, but society, I think we need to talk about our feelings.”

Paul Green coached the Cowboys in 167 games between 2014 and 2020, including the club’s first grand final win in 2015.
