Broncos surge to draw trial with Titans

Brisbane have roared back to life to snare a 26-all draw in their NRL trial against Gold Coast but there was no standout contender to partner Adam Reynolds in the halves come round one.

With big-name recruit Reynolds kept on ice in the stands on Saturday night, things looked dire for the Broncos midway through the second half until they snared three unanswered tries in the final 15 minutes.

Jamayne Isaako nailed a sideline goal after the siren to level up the scores.

Nineteen-year-old playmaker Ezra Mam, who carved up Wynnum Manly last weekend, saw limited action but looked lively for Brisbane, scoring a try in the 66th minute.

Five-eighth Billy Walters was arguably the most impressive playmaker, starting the match alongside Albert Kelly, while Tyson Gamble endured an error-riddled stint off the bench.

Broncos coach Kevin Walters said pre-match he’d yet to decide on Reynolds’ offsider. He’ll hope next week’s trial against North Queensland provides more clarity.

Premiership-winning Penrith second-rower Kurt Capewell made a solid Brisbane debut, breaking the line and displaying his ball-playing skills in a 40-minute stint.

The Titans led 12-8 at half-time with winger Treymain Spry’s 60-metre dash to the try-line the highlight.

Brisbane winger Selwyn Cobbo opened the scoring in the fifth minute while centre Kotoni Staggs scored a brilliant try on return from a knee injury, showcasing his lethal footwork.

The Titans had plenty of reasons to smile as young fullback Jayden Campbell and Toby Sexton, handed the keys following Jamal Fogarty’s exit to Canberra, combined silkily at times in the first half.

Sexton grabbed a four-pointer thanks to a nice offload from prop Jaimin Jolliffe.

Spry collected his double after the break before Esan Marsters and Jaylan De Groot pushed out the margin.

Mam, Cory Paix, who impressed off the interchange at dummy-half, and Brenko Lee then hit back for the Broncos.

Lock Kobe Hetherington was among Brisbane’s top performers.
