Quayle wins Queensland PGA Championship

Anthony Quayle has overcome a series of setbacks to claim a two-stroke victory in the Queensland PGA Championship.

Quayle began Sunday’s final round with a comfortable six-shot buffer but was in immediate trouble after double-bogeying the first hole at Nudgee Golf Club.

His lead had shrunk to three strokes shortly afterwards when New South Welshman Justin Warren rattled in three straight birdies.

Warren claimed a share of the lead when Quayle bogeyed the fifth hole after hitting his approach shot into the hazard.

But Gold Coaster Quayle was able to steady shortly afterwards as Warren made a double-bogey of his own.

“It was more stressful than I thought it would be but it was a lot of fun,” Quayle said after closing with a one-over 73 for a four-round total of 12-under 276.

“I was a little bit surprised my lead had gone that quickly.

“I got off to a terrible start and Justin was pushing really hard. He didn’t miss a shot for the first five holes and then I hit a 5-iron from 180 metres to two feet (at six) and that settled me down a little bit.

“From that point on it calmed me down a lot.”

Fellow Australian Daniel Gale stormed home with a final-round 66 to finish in outright second at 10 under.

Rising star Louis Dobbelaar (71) was third for the second straight week.

In Singapore, young Australian Zach Murray let slip a golden opportunity to lock in a spot at the 150th edition of the British Open at St Andrews.

Needing a top-four finish at the Asian Tour’s Singapore Open to guarantee a start in what would be his first major championship, the 24-year-old Murray dropped three shots at the 15th and 16th holes to slip out of contention.

Murray (73) finished in a tie for ninth at five-under 279, eight shots behind tournament winner Sadom Kaewkanjana from Thailand.

The Victorian won the 2019 New Zealand Open when it was co-sanctioned by the Asian and Australasian Tours.

Murray started the final round in a tie for fourth at Sentosa Golf Club after a sizzling third round of 65.
