Slingshot attack on mosque condemned

A suspected slingshot attack on a mosque could have had tragic consequences, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils says.
Queensland police are investigating the incident at the Salam Mosque Logan City at Berrinba, Brisbane’s south, in the early hours of October 16.
AFIC President Rateb Jneid said on Monday the incident was deeply disturbing and could potentially have led to injury or the loss of life.
“While it would be premature to speculate on the motive behind this incident, it is impossible to ignore the increasingly charged atmosphere in which religious and cultural communities find themselves,” Dr Jneid said.

While the AFIC believed the damage was “consistent with gunfire”, a Queensland Police spokesperson said that a cyclist had used a slingshot or similar device, to propel a ball bearing.
It broke a window of the building on Third Avenue at 4.30am last Friday.
Dr Jneid said the AFIC stood in solidarity with the Logan Mosque community.
“We have confidence that Queensland Police will investigate this matter thoroughly, and we encourage members of the public to assist in any way they can,” he said.
No one was injured in the incident and witnesses were urged to contact police.
