Two sisters have died surrounded by loved ones days after being critically injured in a devastating house fire.

Firefighters plucked Hallie, two, and her big sister Evie, 13, from the flames in Townsville, north Queensland, on Sunday.

Both girls suffered severe breathing issues and were taken to Townsville University Hospital in a critical condition.

After four days of intensive care, the girls died on Thursday, police said.

Two teenage boys were also in the house at the time, but escaped suffering smoke inhalation.

In a statement, the family said they were devastated by their loss.

“There are no words to describe the pain being experienced by the girls’ parents, Karah and Zac,” the statement said.

“Both parents would like to thank friends, extended family and the wider community for the care, compassion and support shown during this incredibly difficult time.”

While they asked for privacy, the statement thanked the community for its support, “understanding and kindness”.

A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $100,000 for the family.

“We are coming together to support Karah, a devoted nurse and single mother of four, whose life was turned upside down by a tragic house fire,” fundraiser Isabella Retallick said.

“In a matter of moments, the fire destroyed her home and displaced her entire family.

“While Karah has spent her career caring for others, she is now facing the unimaginable.”

The cause of the blaze has not been identified, but it is not being treated as suspicious.
