A man has been charged after border officials allegedly found child abuse material on his phone upon returning from the Philippines.

The 25-year-old was arrested after he was selected for a baggage search at Brisbane International Airport on May 4.

Police later seized more devices for examination while searching his home in Toowoomba.

“Identifying this type of material is sadly not uncommon in the line of duty for an ABF officer, and highlights to the community the critical work we do every day at the border,” Australian Border Force Superintendent John Ikin said.

“Our people are highly trained at detecting this type of content and are proud to protect Australians, and by extension the international community.”

The man will face Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with three online child abuse-related offences.
