A search and rescue operation is under way for a missing paddler after an outrigger canoe was found about 100 metres offshore from Thursday Island in Far North Queensland.

A 38-year-old man was last seen paddling in the channel between Horn and Thursday islands in the Torres Strait before the unmanned canoe was found on Wednesday afternoon.

The paddler was last seen about 3.45pm before his hat was found on Channel Rock by a member of the public.

An overnight search involving water police and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority using boats and aerial assets continued at first light on Thursday.

“Every effort possible is being made to find this man, and our thoughts remain with his family, friends and fellow islanders,” Torres Strait Patrol Group Acting Inspector Andrew Pool said.

“Support is being provided to the man’s loved ones, and I know they are very appreciative of the goodwill shown by those who call this place home.”
