Queensland has slashed the price of a learner licence by more than half after revelations drivers paid more than any other state or territory.

From March 1, the $186.55 fee for a three-year learner licence will be reduced to $75, which will be the second-most expensive fee in the country.

Only learner drivers in Western Australia will pay more, slugged $126.10.

In comparison, a permit costs $25 in the Northern Territory and $26 in NSW and Victoria.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said he was proud of the massive saving delivered for learner drivers.

“Our learner licence fee is comparable to other Australian states – especially when factoring in other associated licence costs,” Mr Bailey said in a statement.

“My department will continue to review driver licences and fees as we prepare for the rollout of digital licences this year.”

The price cut comes after months of pressure from Queensland’s Liberal National Party, who labelled the fees an “absolute rip-off”.

“That extra money will mean a lot to Queenslanders and we are proud to have secured the result for them,” LNP leader David Crisafulli said.
