Teen charged over Queensland stabbing

A knife-wielding teen and his partner have been charged by police after a man was stabbed to death overnight on a Brisbane street.

The 43-year-old man was found by a member of the public on the footpath of Newmarket Road in Wilston about 1.50am on Sunday.

Paramedics worked to revive him for 10 to 15 minutes before he was declared dead at the scene.

About an hour and a half earlier, the 17-year-old was stopped by police after he was seen running along the same road in Brisbane’s north.

He was carrying a concealed knife the “size of small machete” when searched by police, Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said.

“This knife went from one side of the body to the other,” he told reporters.

“It’s almost 45 centimetres. To describe it as large is probably an understatement.

“For someone to be carrying that around in quite a public area at that time of night concerns me.”

The teenager has been charged with murder and will be kept in custody to face Brisbane Children’s Court at a later date.

His 17-year-old partner was charged with assaulting a police officer and has also been held in custody to face Children’s Court.

Det Spt Massingham said dash-cam vision from passing traffic along the busy road would likely be key to solving the crime.

“This is indeed a tragic incident,” he said.

“This man was killed less than a kilometre from his home.”

Det Spt Massingham said there was no evidence to suggest the parties knew each other.

He said the victim’s sister had been notified of his death and an autopsy would be conducted on Monday.
