Man charged over Townsville hit and run

Police Forensic Crash Unit investigators have charged a man over an alleged hit and run incident almost a year ago in the Townsville suburb of Hyde Park.

On October 15 last year, a now 90-year-old woman was walking in the underground car park of the Castletown shopping centre near the Barryman Street entrance.

It’s alleged a utility drove past her and began to reverse, colliding with the woman.

She fell and hit her head on the ground, sustaining life-changing injuries.

Police say the utility then left the carpark at speed.

The woman was transported to Townsville Hospital, spending many months in a serious condition with head injuries.

Police have charged a 66-year-old Belgian Gardens man with one count each of driving without due care and attention causing grievous bodily harm and failing to comply with the duties of a driver involved in a crash.

He is due to appear In Townsville Magistrates Court on November 16.
