A man has died in a light plane crash in bushland near Shirbourne in the north Queensland Burdekin region.

Police said the aircraft was overdue to land in Ayr this morning and a search was launched.

An aerial search located the aircraft a short time later.

The pilot and sole occupant of the light aircraft, a 67-year-old Townsville man, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was the only person on board.

The crash location is in rugged bushland near Bahr Road, Shirbourne. Police and emergency services personnel hiked into the scene, which is only accessible on foot.

The scene will be guarded overnight and the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
