Cairns tries tech to get kids playing outside

Parents know how hard it is to get their kids off their screens and in to the great outdoors.
Cairns Regional Council says it’s trialling new technology that could change that.
It’s using geospatial augmented reality to create virtual digital fantasylands at three local parks, hoping to recreate the fun of computer games outdoors.
Children and families can experience virtual unicorns, kittens, dinosaurs, robots and fairies at the Smithfield Library lawn and Goomboora Park on the northside, and at Ravizza Park, Edmonton, in the city’s south.
Mayor Bob Manning said Council is trailing the new technology to encourage children to enjoy the great outdoors.
“This time of the year, the weather is perfect for children to be outside, yet so often parents face the battle of getting the kids out of the house.\
“All they want to do is spend the day lying on the couch playing computer games. Magical Park brings the fun of computer games outside.
“It is about creating a healthy relationship with technology by using the screen to get kids outside and moving around in a fun and engaging setting.
“An added bonus is the games are fun and educational.
“While exploring the virtual worlds, children will learn about Australian wildlife, the environment and the importance of recycling and animal management.”
The system runs via a free mobile app. Children have to be at one of the three locations to use it.
