Police in north Queensland have arrested a man they allege attacked a passing mobile street sweeper with a machete early this morning.

It’s alleged the 46-year-old man from Yeppoon swung the machete, damaging the street sweeper as it was driving along Sydney Street.

The driver of the street sweeper reported the incident to police. They found the man on Victoria Street in the Mackay CBD, where it’s alleged he was still in possession of the machete.

The man has been charged with wilful and unlawful damage and possession of a knife in a public place. He will appear in the Mackay Magistrates Court on September 12.
