A Surfers Paradise man will face charges over an incident on the Gold Coast overnight in which attempts were allegedly made to run down people with a car.

A security guard called police about a taxi driver and four passengers allegedly arguing over a fare. Police said they went to Surfers Paradise Boulevard around 1.30am, where a man was allegedly armed with several knives.

It will be alleged the driver got out and brandished a knife at the passengers, who fled on foot.

Police said the man drove the taxi into one of the men at the intersection of Cavill Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, causing one man to be thrown onto the bonnet of the vehicle.

It’s alleged the man reversed the taxi, revved the engine and drove at speed into another member of the group, narrowly missing him.

The men sustained minor injuries.

Police tracked the vehicle to nearby Macintosh Park and arrested the driver on the side of the Gold Coast Highway.

He’s been charged with going armed so as to cause fear and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He’s been bailed to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on August 15.
