Queensland Police have urged road users to be careful at railway level crossings, after a train and car collided in Cairns.
The collision took place as the historic train was returning to Cairns at the end of a run down the Kuranda Scenic Railway.
Police said a woman and her children were taken to the Cairns Hospital for treatment after their vehicle crashed into an oncoming train at the Arthur Street level crossing yesterday.
The intersection was partially closed for several hours while crews worked to repair damaged powerlines.
Police are urging all road users to obey safety warnings at railway crossings and pay attention to their surroundings.
The train passes through several railway crossings on its way out of Cairns, on its 37-kilometre journey to Kuranda, a village in the hills outside of Cairns. Only some of those crossings have boom gates.
The railway was built in the 1880s to give inland communities a reliable route to the coast. The Kuranda train has long been a popular far north Queensland tourist attraction.
