Burnt remains found in Glasshouse Mountains believed to be human

A four-wheel-drive trip on a remote forestry track in southeast Queensland has led to the discovery of burnt human remains.

Investigations are under way after the bones were found by two men in the Glasshouse Mountains about midday on Tuesday.

Preliminary findings indicate the remains are human and forensic analysis is being done to determine the gender.

Initial examinations indicate the victim is of slight build and small stature. 

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield said the blackened remains were found above ground off an isolated track and appeared to have been burned at the scene.

“The body has been located into some heavily treed and also heavily shrubbed area through lantana which is about 10 meters off a dirt track,” he said. 

The heavily decomposed remains were found in a charred area of bushland.

While police are testing for accelerants, a lighter has been found close to the body, Det Sr Sgt Mansfield said. 

The death is being treated as suspicious, but he said it had been difficult to establish a timeline for the investigation. 

“Everything else is really decomposed state and in a weathered condition.”

Police are scouring through missing person lists but said reports from the immediate area are not a match.
