Rescue spate prompts Queensland Police safety warning

A recent spate of search and rescue operations around Queensland has led to police warning bushwalkers and travellers to better prepare for their journeys.

A helicopter was called in to winch a man to safety after a fall while climbing the 922-metre-tall Walsh’s Pyramid near Gordonvale, south of Cairns, on the weekend.

On Monday, a climber was rescued from a cliff near Beerwah, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland

On Tuesday, a bushwalker got into difficulty near Mount Barney, south-west of Brisbane. The walker was taken by helicopter to Beaudesert Hospital for treatment.

Police have urged walkers and travellers to take precautions, and to tell friends and family of their plans so, if they get into trouble, an alarm can be raised.

They say people should carry food and water, phones or other communications devices, and stay with their vehicles in the event of a breakdown. People who wander off to seek help run the risk of perishing if they do not have adequate supplies or knowledge on how to stay safe.
