In an Australian first, the Aboriginal community of Cherbourg has officially opened a community call centre that will provide much-needed local jobs.

The town, 170 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, has partnered with technology company Fujitsu to create the community-owned facility, giving locals digital experience and career opportunities.

Fujitsu is the centre’s launch customer in a three-year trial project that has support from the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council, the Department of Innovation, Tourism and Sport, and TAFE Queensland.

Cherbourg Mayor, Elvie Sandow, said the project will support the digital transformation of the community.

“It’s the first call centre in an Indigenous community, and I’m very proud to say that.”

The centre will offer training and employment opportunities on country, reducing the need to leave town to find work or gain qualifications.

Fujitsu said it’s proud to be involved in a project that shows people can work and earn from anywhere on the planet with the right digital connectivity, equipment, and training.
