Bundoora to Host Melbourne’s Largest Electric Bus Depot in Major Clean Transport Milestone

Melbourne’s north is on track to become a national leader in clean public transport, with the city’s largest electric bus depot now under construction in Bundoora. The project, led by international EV specialist Zenobē in partnership with local operator Dysons, will enable 188 fully electric, zero-emissions buses to service the city’s northern and north-eastern suburbs.
The new depot marks a major milestone in the rollout of Victoria’s Metropolitan Zero Emissions Bus Franchise (MZF), a state government initiative designed to transition the public transport fleet away from diesel and toward cleaner alternatives. Once complete, the Bundoora depot will be the first in Melbourne to operate under a fully integrated model that combines charging infrastructure and battery management into one seamless service.
Zenobē, which supports over 3,400 electric fleet vehicles across 120 global depots, will install a managed charging and battery solution, ensuring buses are reliably charged and ready for daily operation. The company will take responsibility for depot performance and fleet battery health over a 10-year period, helping reduce the risk and complexity for transport operators.
“This project marks an important step forward for public transport in Victoria and for Australia,” said Zenobē’s Country Director Gareth Ridge. “Our approach allows operators to focus on running services while we handle the tech behind the scenes.”
For Dysons, the transformation of its Bundoora depot reflects a significant shift in operations. The company, which has built a reputation over 73 years as a reliable diesel bus operator, sees the move as essential for the future.
“As time passes, you must evolve,” said Dysons CEO Andrew Jakab. “To become a successful zero-emissions operator, you need the infrastructure to match. This is a once-in-a-generation shift, and we’re proud to be part of it.”
Construction of the depot is expected to be completed by June 2026, with testing and integration to follow. Residents across the region can expect to see the gradual rollout of electric buses shortly after, delivering quieter, cleaner commutes with reduced air and noise pollution.
The Bundoora depot sets a benchmark for scalable electrification in Australia’s public transport sector and provides a replicable model for other regions aiming to decarbonise their fleets while maintaining reliability and service quality.
