First man charged with COVID grant fraud

A NSW strike force set up to catch grifters swindling money from a fund designed to support businesses hard hit by lockdown in has charged its first person.

A 21-year-old from Nowra was on Thursday arrested and charged with 52 offences, after allegedly submitting $530,000 worth of fraudulent applications for COVID-19 support grants.

The man is the first to be charged by Strike Force Sainsbery, established in November to investigate fraudulent applications made against all recent NSW government financial relief schemes related to the pandemic and natural disasters.

Detectives from the Financial Crimes Squad are being assisted by specialist fraud investigators from Service NSW.
