Teen dead, five injured after P-plater slams into tree

A 16-year-old boy has died and five others are injured after a P-plate crash on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Emergency services arrived at the scene on Cabbage Tree Rd in Bayview shortly after 12.20am on Saturday.

They found six teenagers with varying injuries after the ute they were in left the road and hit a tree.

One of the boys, who was travelling in the front passenger seat, was taken to hospital but later died.

The 17-year-old red P-plate driver was airlifted to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Four boys believed to have been in the back seat – one aged 16 and three aged 17 – were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Police do not believe there are any further life-threatening injuries at this stage.

Detective Superintendent Patrick Sharkey said police believe there were only seatbelts in the vehicle for five people and two of the boys may have been ejected during the crash.

“Injuries to the persons … range between serious crush injuries to the chest and also leg fractures and a range of other injuries,” he said.

Police will speak to the driver and surviving passengers to determine the cause of the crash, including whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

“As to where those persons were positioned, whether they were all in the cabin or elsewhere, that is yet to be determined,” Det Supt Sharkey said.

“With six of them in a vehicle and requiring hospitalisation it was quite a serious and lengthy crime scene to be processed.”

Police understand the boys were all friends and were from the Northern Beaches.

Inquiries are being conducted by the police Crash Investigation Unit and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
