Apartment complex fire shuts down major Sydney road

A major Sydney road was closed after flames and thick black smoke poured out of a 15th floor apartment as fire crews battled a blaze in the unit complex.
Fire Rescue NSW said the fire broke out inside the apartment on the Oxford Street just after 5pm on Sunday.
Oxford Street was closed in both directions at Darlinghurst due to the fire between Flinders Street and Brisbane Street, with traffic to and from the eastern suburbs diverted from the area.
Emergency crews were alerted to the fire by an automated fire alarm before multiple witnesses called triple zero.
It took more than 40 firefighters to extinguish the blaze.
At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown.
