A missing newborn has been found dead in a garbage bin, as authorities desperately hunt for the baby’s mother.

Emergency services responded to reports about 11:30am on Monday and found the body of a newborn boy in Auburn, in western Sydney, NSW police said.

“As investigations continue, police hold serious concerns for the welfare of the baby’s mother,” a statement read.

The whereabouts of the mother remains unknown and police are appealing for her to attend her nearest hospital to receive urgent care for herself.

The newborn was located in a garbage bin along Harrow Road, Auburn.

Police are expected to address media to provide an update later on Monday afternoon.
