Police say a man threw hot water at officers during a long siege after reports of an assault.

Hot water has been repeatedly thrown at officers during a 14-hour siege after a woman was allegedly assaulted, police say.

A 55-year-old man is accused of throwing hot water through a front door and hitting three officers before being pepper-sprayed and arrested after negotiations went into the early hours.

Officers responded to reports of an aggravated assault at an address in Gray near Darwin about 3.50pm on Tuesday.

The man became aggressive when officers asked if a woman had been assaulted at the address and denied she was present before threatening to throw hot water, police said.

The man allegedly allowed the woman to exit the residence before locking himself inside a short time later.

The 55-year-old is accused of hitting two officers with hot water thrown twice through a screen door after being told he was under arrest and asked to exit.

The man allegedly barricaded himself inside the residence and threatened to self-harm before throwing hot water on a third officer.

The area was cordoned off and negotiators arrived, speaking with the man.

“He continued to present at the door, allegedly displaying an edged weapon in the process,” Northern Territory Police said in a statement.

Police removed the screen door and a front window about 1.55am on Wednesday to provide a clearer view of the man during negotiations.

Pepper sprays were used about 6.05am, allowing officers to enter the residence and safely arrest the 55-year-old, police said.

Officers did not require medical treatment.

The man is in custody with charges expected, police said.
