Lions’ Rayner defensive AFL experiment to continue

The Cam Rayner defensive experiment may become permanent after Brisbane coach Chris Fagan signalled his intent to add another “lever” to the former No.1 pick’s game.

Rayner is entering his sixth year in the Lions’ system, and his fifth on the paddock after a knee reconstruction ruled him out of the 2021 campaign.

Fagan has used the powerful talent in the forward 50 and the midfield, and this pre-season has trialled Rayner at halfback.

The 23-year-old will line up there again on Thursday night against the Cats at Brisbane’s new Springfield base, offering the coach one last look before the home and away season begins.

“The big test was going to be how he goes against opposition, so in Sydney (in a practice match win) on the weekend was pretty solid,” Fagan said.

“So he gets another good test this weekend and then we’ll make up our minds after that.

“But we’ve probably seen enough to know that he can play there if we need him.”

Recruits Josh Dunkley, Jack Gunston and Irishman Conor McKenna have joined the Lions, while draft picks Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher have boosted the stocks in most positions.

Fagan said versatility remained a vital element for players.

“It helps you in the coach’s box; you have more levers to pull,” he said.

“We’re just adding a few more levers we can pull on Cam Rayner.

“We know he can play forward, can play powerfully in short bursts in the midfield and now have a fair feeling he can play down the back. That adds to his value.”
