Woman’s body found in grass by neighbour mowing yard

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a woman whose body was found by a neighbour mowing her yard in the state’s far north.

Officers believe the 38-year-old most likely died on Sunday evening. The neighbour made the discovery in grassland in Cooktown on Monday afternoon. 

Detective Inspector Jason Chetham said the properties were a continuation of one another, and there was no fence between them.

Police want to speak with a number of people in relation to the death, some of whom are not in Cooktown.

“There is one person we want to speak to, a potential witness, who is at sea, and that will be completed today hopefully,” Det Insp Chetham told reporters on Friday.

He said officers had been called to an area near woman’s address on Sunday night after reports of an argument.

It’s not known if there is a connection.

The woman’s partner is among the people police are speaking to.
