Francis Manuleleua and Jermaine McEwen have been rewarded for their starring roles in Newcastle’s run to the NRL grand final with the back-row duo named in Samoa’s Rugby League World Cup squad.

Even without Payne Haas, as the South Sydney-bound prop undergoes hand surgery, the Samoan squad is still packed with talent.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Brian To’o and Stephen Crichton are all included, along with Sydney Roosters front-rower Spencer Leniu following his exploits in the NRL grand final.

Jarome Luai will co-captain the side with Parramatta prop Junior Paulo.

“One of the great things rugby league does is bring people together,” Toa Samoa coach Ben Gardiner said.

“As we build towards our first World Cup game, we want to thank all Samoans around the world for their ongoing support.

“Your blessings and prayers are welcomed.

“Whether you are in Samoa, elsewhere around the world, taking part in a parade or marching into the ground, we see you and thank you for your love and support.”

Roosters hooker Benaiah Ioelu is likely to share hooking duties with Jazz Tevaga, who won the Super League grand final with Wakefield last week.

Gardiner’s side will open their campaign against France in Parramatta before facing Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby and rounding out their pool stage fixtures against Tonga.
