Ukraine is making progress in developing its own ballistic missile defence system, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says as his country continues to suffer daily Russian aerial attacks. 

“We can confirm that our arms manufacturers have already reached the required standard,” Zelenskiy wrote on social media following a meeting with defence and security experts.

“We expect Ukraine to achieve the desired results in the period 2026-2027.” 

Ukraine is relying on its emerging FREYJA system to be a cost-effective and high-performance alternative to the US-designed Patriot system, supplied by the United States and other NATO military alliance members after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

However, the country remains highly vulnerable amid shortages of the interceptor.

Zelenskiy has repeatedly called on allies to release their own stocks while Ukraine develops its own system.
