How celebrity agent kept rape crimes secret for years

For decades, entertainment and sports agent Ralph Carr managed the public image of his broad stable of stars.
But for the past three years, he fought to keep his name – and his sex crimes – a secret due to his mental health.
That battle ended on Monday as the 66-year-old was exposed as a convicted rapist.
Carr, now in prison and considering an appeal, built his career managing some of the biggest names in Australian music and sport, including singers Kate Ceberano and Tina Arena, entertainment presenter Richard Wilkins and AFL star Dustin Martin.
When charged in 2023, defence barrister Dermot Dann KC managed to keep his client’s name and identity hidden from all media reporting.
Mr Dann said his client’s mental health was “central” to the order, as he called a psychiatrist to give evidence to Melbourne’s County Court about Carr during a hearing in December 2024.
Jacqueline Rakov labelled the media “vultures” as she told the court Carr had post-traumatic stress disorder which began with his arrest and claimed he had been tormented by police in custody.
Dr Rakov said he had attempted suicide twice before she began treating him and coverage would increase the likelihood of harm.
Multiple media outlets and the prosecution opposed the suppression order, with media lawyer Justin Quill labelling Carr’s attempt to hide his identity as extraordinary.
The order was granted and should have expired at the conclusion of Carr’s trial on Friday, when he was thrown behind bars after being found guilty of two counts of rape and one of sexual assault.
But Mr Dann again claimed there would be a heightened risk to Carr’s mental health if his name were revealed, as he successfully applied for an interim gag order.
Over that period, Carr’s name was leaked on social media and in online forums.
On Monday, Mr Dann informed the court Carr no longer wished to pursue the order and it was revoked.
Carr joins another high-profile man from sporting circles who kept his rape conviction hidden during his rape trial.
The identity of Tom Silvagni, son and grandson of AFL legends Stephen and Serge Silvagni, was revealed a week after he was found guilty of rape in December 2025, when the judge found the risk to his mental health would be reduced in custody.
Carr has represented some of the biggest names in Australian music and football, including Ceberano, Wilkins, Vanessa Amorosi and former wife Tina Arena, who married Carr while signed with him, before separating in the early 2000s.
His company claims to be “one of the most successful and respectful artist management companies in Australian history”.
He branched into sports management and guided the careers of AFL players including Martin.
Martin, who won three premierships with Richmond, issued a statement on Monday that he was shocked to learn of the outcome and had ended his professional relationship with Carr “effective immediately”.
“I had no knowledge whatsoever of the conduct that led to these convictions. My thoughts are with those affected,” he said.
In December 2025, Mr Dann had two sets of forensic evidence ruled out of the jury trial, which includes Carr’s underpants and an early evidence kit from his victim.
Judge Frank Gucciardo found both sets of evidence were inadmissible.
A jury could not find the victim had followed protocols, considering she conducted the kit test alone in a bathroom, and Carr’s underpants – which had been retrieved from his washing machine – might have been contaminated with other DNA, the judge found.
Carr’s victim faced giving evidence to a jury for six days, including cross-examination from defence in closed court.
Her attacker was ultimately found guilty of assaulting the woman at his Melbourne home in the early hours of March 24, 2023, after she discussed work with Carr and became emotional about her recent break-up.
Carr hugged her, she pushed him away and he began touching her breasts, waist and buttocks, before raping her twice.
Mr Dann said Carr maintained his innocence and planned to apply for a rare stay on his sentence, pending an appeal hearing against his convictions.
Carr will remain in custody until a pre-sentence hearing at a later date.
