Benji Marshall has revealed he dropped Heamasi Makasini to aid his long-term development as the Wests Tigers coach backed the teen prodigy to overcome his “confidence issues”.

The 18-year-old, who was likened to Jonah Lomu after one rampaging run in a trial win over Penrith, was not named in Marshall’s side for Thursday’s clash with Canberra at Leichhardt Oval.

Makasini struggled under the high ball in last week’s 21-20 loss to Brisbane in what was just his seventh game of NRL.

“I want to praise him for how awesome he’s been to start the season,” Marshall said.

“He’s 18 years old, coming in, playing centre – which is probably the hardest position to defend on the field – and he did a great job.

“Part of my job as a coach is also to know when to take the pressure off him.

“It’s just a good reminder for a lot of people out there that sometimes we go off early on young blokes by comparing them, unfairly, to some of the greatest athletes that ever played.

“He is a unique talent and someone we see as (having) a long-term future for us.

“He’s having a bit of confidence issues at the moment, but he’ll bounce back.”

Marshall has opted to take the teenager out of the firing line altogether and won’t deploy Makasini in NSW Cup as he recovers from a minor foot issue.

Starford Toa returns from a foot injury to partner Taylan May at centre, while Luke Laulilii comes in on the wing alongside Sunia Turuva.

“A lot of people look at it (when) someone goes back to reserve grade like it’s a punishment,” Marshall said.

“Sometimes it’s actually the best thing for you to go and learn your trade get some confidence.”

Fullback Jahream Bula is fit to play after being knocked about in the Brisbane loss as the Tigers (4-2) look to extend their encouraging start to the season against the Raiders (3-4).

Marshall spoke glowingly of Canberra coach Ricky Stuart who, like the Tigers mentor, tends to instruct his side from the touchline rather than in the box.

“What I love about Ricky is his passion, I think you can just see there’s no bullshit with him and he speaks his mind,” Marshall said.

“He’s so passionate about his team – I love that.

“I love being on the sideline, because I feel like I’m more a part of the game, and feel the energy of the players and the team.”
