A car crash that left Nikita Tszyu nursing minor injuries has forced him to halt training and thrown his all-Australian duel with Michael Zerafa into question.

The car the undefeated 27-year-old was travelling in was hit at an intersection on the weekend, leaving Tszyu sore and requiring medical clearance to return to training.

The brother of former world champion Tim and son of the great Kostya had been deep in discussions to fight Zerafa, likely on the Gold Coast before year’s end.

A blockbuster clash with Zerafa could now at least be delayed until 2026.

“Nikita Tszyu was involved in a car accident over the weekend when the vehicle he was travelling in was struck at an intersection,” a statement from promoter No Limit read on Tuesday.

“He sustained minor injuries and is now recovering at home with his family.

“A decision regarding any return to the ring in 2025 will be made in the coming weeks.”

A clash with Zerafa would be the stiffest test yet for super welterweight Tszyu (11-0), who has rarely been tested since giving up work as an architect to join the family business in 2022.
