Police have charged a teenager with murder after a man was allegedly stabbed at a home in the Cairns suburb of Caravonica on Friday night.

Paramedics and police were called to the home after 9pm, where they found a 34-year-old man in critical condition with multiple wounds.

They were not able to save the man and he was later declared dead at the scene.

A 19-year-old male found at the home was assisting police with their inquiries on Friday night.

He was later charged with murder and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday.

Far North District Crime Inspector, Mick Searle, said it’s believed a knife was used in the incident which may have started from a family disturbance.

“There was a family relationship via one party being in a relationship with the other party’s sister.

“That’s still being worked on at the moment, as to how we establish the mechanics of that relationship.

“But the parties were quite well known to each other.

“The allegation will be that the deceased was stabbed four times.”

Inspector Searle said the investigation will examine reports of loud arguments at the home prior to the alleged stabbing.

“Information came in from surrounding residents as well in regards to a disturbance that was occurring at this address.

“That’s going to take us quite some time to get to the bottom of that.”

Investigations are continuing.
