Police have charged a woman with arson after fire destroyed a yacht in the Queensland Whitsunday region.

Water police were called to reports of an assault and fire onboard a 40-foot yacht moored in Pioneer Bay on Friday afternoon.

The woman was forced to jump into the sea when flames engulfed the vessel.

She was rescued by police and taken to hospital with serious injuries including burns to her legs.

Police will allege that a 64-year-old man sustained minor injuries from an assault earlier that day.

The woman remains in police custody in hospital and will face charges of arson, assault, and contravening a police protection notice.
