Police are warning road users to always expect the unexpected, after a vehicle rollover at the scene of a road wildlife rescue in far north Queensland.

A driver had spotted an echidna on the Malanda-Millaa Millaa road at Minbun, and stopped to rescue it with a towel.

Police said several other vehicles had stopped  to assist, blocking the road on a 100 kilometre-per-hour zone.

Another car came round a bend, unexpectedly heading for a line of stationary vehicles.

Police said the driver attempted to stop, and was able to avoid a potentially serious crash, but skidded to the left-hand side of the road.

The car’s left wheels came to rest over the edge of a retaining wall, and the car overturned, rolling down a near vertical embankment before coming to a stop.

The two people onboard, and the echidna, escaped without injury.

Police said drivers stopping to assist an animal or at the scene of an accident should move as far off the road as possible, turn on hazard lights, and stop a safe distance from other vehicles.
