Woman killed in golf buggy tragedy on Hamilton Island was on honeymoon

A 29 year-old woman from Sydney, Marina Morgan, has been identified as the person tragically killed in an accident on Hamilton Island in which a golf buggy being driven by her new husband rolled.

Ms Morgan and husband Robbie from Sydney’s west had only just begun their honeymoon when the accident happened as Mr Morgan attempted a U-turn at the north end of Hamilton Island on Whitsunday Boulevard.

Queensland Police said the tragedy happened as the pair approached the intersection with Coral Sea Avenue and the buggy overturned.

Ms Morgan died at the scene despite valiant attempts by a firefighter and dentist who happened to be on the island and fought to save her.

Police said the pair were joined by a doctor and paramedic from the island who performed CPR for 35 minutes to no avail.

Queensland police Inspector Anthony Cowan said there was no indication of alcohol or dangerous driving.

“Unfortunately the female has fallen out and sustained life-threatening injuries,” he said.

“It just appears inexperience in driving that type of vehicle, turned too quick and rolled on its side and unfortunately, it has ended up with this result.”

Inspector Cowan said Hamilton Island golf buggies were fitted with seatbelts, and both police and island management enforced their use.

“They are subject to the same condition as any gazetted road on Hamilton Island,” he said.

“It appears there was no seatbelt worn at this point in time; we come back to the ‘fatal five’, but now is not the time to dwell on what they should have done.”

Mr Morgan was not physically injured.

Golf buggies are the main form of transport on Hamilton Island.
